Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach that helps the brain process and heal from distressing or traumatic experiences that have become "stuck" in the nervous system. Rather than requiring clients to repeatedly retell every detail of a traumatic event, EMDR uses structured protocols and bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements, alternating taps, or auditory tones—to support the brain's natural ability to reprocess memories. As these memories become more adaptively integrated, they often lose their emotional intensity, allowing negative beliefs (such as "I'm not safe" or "I'm not good enough") to be replaced with healthier, more accurate beliefs. EMDR has been extensively researched and is recognized as an effective treatment for PTSD, while also helping many individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, phobias, chronic stress, and other challenges rooted in difficult life experiences. At Valor Horses for Heroes, all of our therapists have completed EMDR basic training through an EMDRIA-approved training program and participate in ongoing consultation with experienced EMDR consultants and leaders in the field. This commitment to continuing education ensures that clients receive high-quality, evidence-based care grounded in current best practices.
